new blog platform
Help! I need suggestions.
I love Xanga, but it's awfully lonely over here since almost everyone has jumped ship.
I don't have much web-design know-how. I want a platform that is elegant and simple.
Blogger? I kinda hate that name. WordPress? It looks cool but may be a bit complicated.
Any suggestions?

i do suggest blogger, even though the name is weird. -danielle
wordpress is not complicated. you are a graduate student - trust me you can do an amazing job. my personal problems with blogger might not even be true anymore, its from when i used to use it.
it's harder to customize it (i find everyone's look virtually the same)
i have a hard time uploading photos to it (might be a mac or old mac thing)
I don't like how the dashboard feels so separate from the blog itself (if that makes sense)
wordpress cons - if you want to change css/design stuff (really in depth) you have to pay to do it, or host your blog somewhere else.
blogger, a little easier to host your blog somewhere else - not as many steps.
there is also no harm in trying them both in private and deciding which one you like better. in fact, thats' what i would suggest. they are both good, both better than xanga (although i do miss xang sometimes. there was a certain personal freedom that came with it!)
email me if you have any questions about all this.
I like Blogger and almost everyone I know uses it. It may not have the millions of pre-set layouts, but I have heard from some that it is customizeable. I have never tried it myself. The easy pre-set layout I found works just fine for me. :) I do find the photo upload to be a little cumbersome, but no more than Xanga. I opt for the easier route of building slideshows most of the time.
It is such a bitter-sweet thing, this church thing. It will be so cool to see what God does in the Fan's lives. They are amazing people. I have been blessed to know them.
How is married life going? How is the new apartment? I am looking forward to seeing pictures!
I loved the post on YSL. That would be really cool to go see.
I will weigh in to say that in my opinion, Blogger is the most customizable out of the box, because it gives you full access to the HTML and CSS of your theme. The reason everyone's looks the same is that most people don't really care to edit the HTML and CSS, so they stick with the boring pre-ready themes.
Wordpress has some nice themes to choose, but it blocks access from the CSS and limits you to only a certain number of themes and plugins. If you decide to host the blog on your own site, Wordpress becomes a lot better because you can edit the theme and pick from a huge list of community made themes and plugins.
The latest version of Wordpress (though it took me a while to get used to it) is actually well designed and has some very neat features like an auto photo gallery, etc.
Let me know if any of this didn't make sense at all. At any rate, I'll be thankful when you leave Xanga so I can be one step closer to never having to visit "xanga.com" ever again... :)
